Scootababy
The Scootababy Baby Carrier is a soft structured carrier that is specifically designed as a hip carrier. Although you can wear it on the front or back, it shines in a hip carry. Carry Me Baby Carrier Rental Service sent me one to check out so I was able to see it in person although I could not actually wear it since my two children are not in the size range that it is suited for.
The most notable difference in The Scootababy that sets it apart from other soft structured carriers is the strap. It is shaped to cup your shoulder and is what makes it great for a hip carry. It is made of fleece and so it is soft and moldable. Putting it on, it spread very nicely and comfortably on my shoulder.
I did put my daughter (3.5 years old) in it briefly just to get an idea of what it was like but had a little trouble figuring it out properly. Since I’m using to using a soft structured carrier primarily in a front carry, it just felt a little weird putting it on. I’m sure, with a little practice it wouldn’t be any harder than getting any other soft structured carrier on.
The best ages for this are starting at around 5 months (when your baby can sit up unassisted and hold his/her head up) to 35 lbs. (although my daughter is only 30 lbs and felt too big to me for it.) If you find that you carry your child on your hip a lot, this may be a carrier worth looking in to.
