Babywearing Mama Profile – Jennifer

Each week I’ll be introducing you to a babywearing mama (or papa!) during A Little Bit of All of It’s Babywearing Series. Find out more about this mama at the end of the post.

When did you start wearing your baby/young child? I started wearing her as soon as we got home, and our first carrier was a ring sling in a beautiful green organic cotton.

What is your favorite carrier? My favorite carrier is my Victoria Slinglady wrap.

What is your favorite carry? Front position, against the boobs 😉

How did you first learn about Babywearing and what were your initial impressions of it? I think I saw one on TV, not sure what I was watching, and just fell in love with them.

How many carriers do you own and what are they? Five, including the ones her daddy uses.  Two hand-me-down Snugli’s, my ring sling, my wrap, and daddy has a backpack carrier.

Do you have a favorite babywearing story/scenario? I was grocery shopping with Evening snuggled into her sling, smiling happily at everyone.  Every once in a while a can of soup or brightly coloured package would catch her eye and she would start reaching for it, eager to gnaw on it.  I placate her with my DIY teething necklace, but these days it is hard to hold her attention for long.

Although I rarely get to have her attention when there are so many new people and things to take in, for some reason her eyes settled on my face in the Whole Foods aisle.  I returned her gaze, her cute little yellow hat slightly askew, a bit of drool glistening on her chin, her mouth just a little unsure of whether to smile or not.

I bent my head just a little to rub noses with her, something we often do during our beginning-of-the-day cuddles.  Her smile broke delightedly.  I rubbed her nose with mine again, and her bubbly baby laughter filled the aisles.  Again…and again, the two of us in our own little love world, bonding in the middle of a grocery store.

Not exactly the usual sort of PDA (public display of affection) you might see while running errands, which is rather sad, if you think about it.

So once again I am filled with appreciation for my humble little sling.  Sure, maybe it is easier to load a bag of kitty litter when you don’t have a munchkin strapped to your chest, but I wouldn’t give up these moments of closeness for anything in the world.

What is the strangest or funniest thing you’ve done while wearing your baby? Carrying my cat back into the house (!)  they love each other, but it was rather crowded.

What is your favorite thing about wearing your baby? my favorite thing is the built in snuggles 😉 My daughter is a happy girl, but seeing her take on the world from the safety of her sling is a wonder to behold.  Great big, fearless smiles, and no sign of acting ‘strange’ like she will when she is not in her sling.  She’s safe with mummy, and she knows it.

Jenn, AKA naturemummy,, new mum to almost 12-month-old little girl named Evening, definitely enjoying the ride.  She is an attachment parenting, creative, inventive, nature loving mum making new discoveries every day.  She blogs at Motherhood: My Latest Adventure about those very things, plus some extra silliness thrown in for laughs. You can also find her on Twitter and Facebook.
