August Book Selection: One Hundred Years of Solitude

I realize I am quite late in posting this, seeing as it is October and all, but life happens, and it took me a lot longer than I had anticipated to finish August’s book selection, One Hundred Years of Solitude. Before we get to my review, go ahead and read contributor Lori’s review.

Okay, now that you’ve read a nice review from someone who enjoyed the book, I’ll go ahead and give mine. I hate to say it, but I just really did not like this book. I really wanted to and thought I would. After all, several friends who have loved it, and it’s a classic! But, try as a I might, I did not enjoy it. It is written in a style I did not personally care for called magical realism. I think that was probably my main reason for disliking it.

The story follows one family and town through one hundred years. The author weaves a fantastical tale with a mundane delivery, as if it all was just completely normal and believable as something that could have happened. I get that it is purposeful and what a lot of people enjoy about this book. And I can appreciate the naming of the characters and the theme of history repeating itself. The imaginary of the town was interesting as well but it wasn’t enough for me to actually enjoy reading it.

I also struggled with the fact I did not enjoy or care about any of the characters. I didn’t really even care about the town or it’s eventual demise. It was hard for me to continue reading when I had no one to care enough about to root for. I guess I prefer my characters not to all be so incredibly flawed. If I had to pick a favorite or two I suppose I would go with Remedios the Beauty or Fernanda.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t read the book. Scores of people adore this book. I just don’t happen to be one of them. What are your thoughts on One Hundred Years of Solitude?
