We’re on a six-week path to eat more whole foods, guided by one simple rule: Buy foods with six ingredients or fewer. And we’re blogging about our journey on the way.

This week we’re answering the question: Why do you want to participate in the Six Ingredient Challenge?

You can see all the responses to this question on February 7 at the link-up post.

Recently our meals have been less than ideal. I don’t really have any real excuse either. Sure, some situations have cropped up that have made it difficult to be at home at dinner time that resulted in eating out way more than we normally do, but I still could have made it work to eat healthfully. So I’m just being honest and saying laziness has been a big reason. I’m hoping this challenge will get me back into the swing of family meals at home which in turn means less garbage food that doesn’t nourish our bodies.

This challenge specifically is targeting processed food. We have come a long way in ridding our pantry and fridge of processed packaged foods, but we have a lot of work still to do. I’m hoping to be even more intentional about buying real, whole food and less on relying on boxes and cans.

I still have some family favorites that I need to convert to whole foods. I’ve been able to find replacements for some of our favorites that are just as good, if not better, than the originals but not everything. I recently started reading Better Than a Box, an ebook offered from Kitchen Stewardship, a blog I follow and love. I’ve been enjoying it and hoping it will help me final tackle those last holdouts so I can make them again but with real food.

This week has had it’s good and bad food moments. But whenever I do eat food that I know is not good for my body, I feel poorly and I notice that it doesn’t even taste good.

We also have been taking a great class, Dr. Sears L.E.A.N. Start, and we’re learning a lot of new things we didn’t know before as well as being reminded of good nutrition info. Definitely a great class to check out if you are interested in learning more about eating optimally. We are halfway through the series right now and just covered fiber, fruits and vegetables. Good stuff.

I look forward to reading what the other challenge participants have to say and to learn some new things from them as well.

Are you trying to eat more real food? What tips do you have on cooking without the processed foods so prevalent in our culture today?
