Babywearing Mama Profile – Jennifer

Each week I’ll be introducing you to a babywearing mama (or papa!) during A Little Bit of All of It’s Babywearing Series. Find out more about this mama at the end of the post. (You can be included in a future post by filling out the Babywearing Profile form.)

When did you start wearing your baby/young child? Much to my dismay, I had a c-section and was unable to babywear for the first couple of months. I did try quite a few wraps, but my recovery was difficult and babywearing was not an option while I healed. My first experience successfully wearing my daughter was when she was 9 weeks old. I used a Moby Wrap, and we were both in heaven!

What is your favorite carrier? I loved the Moby for the first 6 months, but then the Beco became my favorite carrier. I still use it to this day…3 1/2 years later.

What is your favorite carry? Since my daughter is 3 1/2 and 27 pounds, I prefer the back carry although sometimes she does ask to ride on my front. I can’t do much this way though. When my daughter was a baby, I loved the hip carry when I needed to get things done around the house and the front carry for snuggling.

How did you first learn about Babywearing and what were your initial impressions of it? All my friends had babies before I did, and I saw them babywearing. It was my lovely Doula who actually introduced me to the vast world of carrier options. Once she took me down that road, there was no turning back. I knew I would babywear for a loooong time.

How many carriers do you own and what are they? I own the two carriers I have used: the Moby Wrap and the Beco.

Do you have a favorite babywearing story/scenario? My favorite memory while babywearing is when my daughter was still pretty little, 8 months and younger. She used to lick my cleavage in the front carry. She would just sit there and lick and lick and lick. It was her not so subtle cue that it was time for mama’s milkies.

What is the strangest or funniest thing you’ve done while wearing your baby? I have done all kinds of things while babywearing. I think sneaking my daughter into a wedding while babywearing was the best. No one knew she was there!

What is your favorite thing about wearing your baby? Hands down, my favorite aspect of babywearing is the closeness. There is nothing better than having your child so close to your heart. It really is like having an external womb.

Anything else you would like to add about babywearing? There are so many carrier options out there and it can be frustrating to know which one will work best for you and your child. I suggest not purchasing one until you meet your child and figure out what will feel best for the both of you. Borrowing carriers is a great route if you have babywearing friends!
