“…Like a Father with his Children…”
I wanted to continue my series on bible verses and children. This time I thought I would focus on the verses relating to fathers in the bible. If you would like to see my other posts on this series check out my collection of verses on Jesus and children and nursing mothers.
For simplicity’s sake, all verses below are the ESV translation.
For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. I Thessalonians 2:11-12
Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Colossians 3:21
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4
What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:11-13
A fool despises his father’s instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is prudent. Proverbs 15:5
The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice. Proverbs 23:24-25
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Ephesians 6:1-3
Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 19:3
My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. Proverbs 6:20
Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. Hebrews 12:9-10
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12
Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers. Proverbs 17:6
Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck. Proverbs 1:8-9
Then I said to you, ‘Do not be in dread or afraid of them. The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ Deuteronomy 1:29-31
And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.” Malachi 4:6
As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. Psalm 103:13
My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. Proverbs 3:11-12
Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Proverbs 23:22
It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? Hebrews 12:7
